Mercom India Research, a clean energy agency, released the latest "India Solar Market Ranking 1H 2020", which shows the main market leaders in the Indian solar industry from the first half of 2020 (January to June). The report also includes the market share and shipment ranking of major stakeholders in the Indian solar supply chain in the first half of 2020.

In the first half of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic severely affected the Indian solar market, leading to an overall slowdown in solar installation activities. During the period, the total installed capacity of solar energy in India was 1.3 GW, which was a 60% decrease from the 3.2 GW installed capacity in 1H in 2019. The slowdown in activity across the industry has led to a shuffle in the solar market rankings.

Raj Prabhu, CEO of Mercom Capital Group, said, "This is different from any year in the history of the Indian solar industry. Although installations are at a historically low level, the market also creates opportunities for new leaders and innovators."

Large solar

In the first half of 2020, 1,016 megawatts of utility-scale solar installations were installed, accounting for 78% of the new capacity. Solar energy accounted for 56% of the country's new electricity capacity in the first half of the year.

The report also showed that by the first half of 2020, the top ten utility-scale (operational) project developers accounted for 94% of the market share. HeroFuture Energies led the installation of utility-scale projects in the first half of 2020 due to the commissioning of its 300 MW project in the Bhadla Solar Park in the first half of the year.

In terms of cumulative installed capacity, as of June 2020, Adani is still the largest utility-scale developer. The company also has the largest project pipeline.

According to Mercom data, there are currently 10 utility-scale solar developers in India that are developing projects of more than 1 GW.

Solar inverter supplier

In the first half of 2020, Sungrow is the largest supplier of solar central inverters, and Huawei is the largest supplier of string inverters in India. As of June 2020, FIMER India is cumulatively the largest supplier of solar inverters.

However, the Ministry of New Energy and Renewable Energy (MNRE) of India is also streamlining the technical specifications of solar grid-connected inverters, and existing policies may be adjusted to foreign solar inverter suppliers and all foreign solar equipment providers. Will have an impact.

Solar module supplier

In the first half of 2020, India's top ten module suppliers accounted for more than 74% of the market share. Longi Leye Photovoltaic is the largest module supplier in India in the first half of 2020, while Trina Solar is the leading module supplier in cumulative shipments.

However, module suppliers are waiting for further clarification on the government’s proposed basic tariff (BCD). The government has not announced the amount of tariffs and their deadlines.

At the same time, from July 30, 2020 to January 29, 2021, the safeguard duty (SGD) of solar cells and modules imported from China, Thailand and Vietnam has been 14.90%, from January 30 to July 2021 The protection tax on the 29th is 14.50%. Both BCD and SGD are expected to restrict imports and provide domestic manufacturers with an advantage in competition with cheap modules.

Installation structure

Mahindra Susten led the supply of modular installation structures in the first half of 2020, followed by Ganges Internationale and Strolar. As of June 2020, in terms of cumulative scale, Ganges International is also a leading supplier.

In June, the Ministry of Finance imposed anti-dumping duties on aluminum and zinc-coated flat products used to install structures in China, Vietnam and South Korea to protect domestic industries. The tax will take effect on October 15, 2019, and will be valid for five years.

Rooftop solar

In the first half of 2020, the top ten rooftop solar installers in the Indian market accounted for approximately 70% of the entire market. However, affected by the epidemic, the rooftop solar market plummeted by 50% compared to the same period last year.

The C&I part is expected to pick up in the second half of the year, especially in industries such as transportation, IT, consumer goods, medicine and textiles. Tata Solar Power Co., Ltd. installed the largest rooftop solar project in the Indian market in the first half of the year and is also the largest rooftop solar service provider cumulatively installed in the first half of the year....
